1. Double Dragon Temple

Double Dragon Temple is a great dumpling spot down one of Ubud’s art market streets. This Ubud restaurant is very easy to miss if you are not on the lookout for it. 

Dumplings come as boiled or pan-fried; I prefer boiled. Pork and prawn were my favourites, but the chicken and mushrooms ones weren’t bad. Sesame noodles are delicious, too. $160 000 for a set of 30 dumplings

2. Babi Guling Gung Cung

Babi Guling Gung Cung specializes in Balinese suckling pigs. The dish consists of all parts of the pig cooked over an open fire. Tender meat with blood sausage, crackling, fried offal, and pork belly with soup. 

They say that the owner and Chef is the son of the Ibu Oka chef made famous by Anthony Bourdain. I cannot attest to the truth of that but the suckling pig is melt-in-your-mouth delicious and packed with flavour.

The full meal is $ 70,000 and gets cheaper if you are willing to pass on the soup. And some fixings. Babi Guling Gung Cung is one of the most popular places with the locals. Come early before they sell out.

3. You & Mie Noodle House

You & Mie Noodle House is a unique noodle restaurant in Ubud that serves up more than just nasi goreng. Dragon fruit and beetroot noodles are just two of the specialties of this tiny noodle spot serving up delicious dishes in Ubud.

They make their own noodles, wontons, and broth in-house.  Noodles are not the only thing on the menu; the fried chicken was delicious and reminded me of Korean style, but a little sweeter. The friendly owner speaks perfect English and is culinary school-trained.

Bonus: Best Bar in Ubud: LOL Bar

LOL Reggae Bar is an Ubud live music venue. Reggae music is on Friday from 8:30 – 11 pm-ish by a fantastic band, Grima Far. A great cast of characters of all ages dancing to Marley, spreading happiness and love. Reasonably priced Bintang Radlers, clean, well-stocked bathrooms, and great service.

Those are my top 3 Indonesian restaurants in Ubud. They are not about having a fine dining experience or eating Western dishes. Instead are fantastic hole-in-the-walls with a relaxed atmosphere that serve great Indonesian food and have great customer service.
